Space heater safety for cold winter nights

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Saturday night was not the first time this year temperatures have dipped below freezing and it certainly will not be the last.

Many folks will depend on space heaters to keep warm and that increases the risk of house fires this time of the year.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has some tips about how to use portable heaters.

  • Never use them to dry clothing or to heat frozen pipes.
  • Keep the heater in safe working order and replace any missing guards or controls immediately
  • Don't put the heater where children might burn themselves or knock it over
  • Always make sure you have a functioning smoke detector on every floor of your home.
