Storm damage in Yazoo City

Posted: Updated:

YAZOO CITY, Miss. (AP) - A possible tornado swept through parts of Yazoo City late Monday, downing power lines, uprooting trees and damaging property, but there were no immediate reports of injuries, the sheriff's office said.

Just seven months earlier, nearly 200 homes in Yazoo County were destroyed or damaged by an April tornado.

Monday's severe weather tore through the same area ahead of a cold front moving across the state, said Daniel Lamb, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. There were reports of similar damage near Vicksburg and Valley Park.

"We can't confirm whether it was a tornado, but it's what's expected based on what is being seen on radar," he said.

It's unclear what the extent of the damage is at this point. More would be known once storm survey teams can assess what happened, officials said.

The head of the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency earlier urged residents to prepare. MEMA Director Mike Womack said the National Weather Service had forecast possible flash flooding, high winds and tornadoes as a cold front pushed through the state late Monday and Tuesday.

Lamb said much of the state remains under a tornado watch or warning until at least 4 a.m.
