Seven injured in Attala County storms

Posted: Updated:

ATTALA COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - Attala County emergency management officials are awaiting daylight to do a complete damage assessment.

Even in the dark, the destruction was apparent. Attala County EOC director Danny Townsend has confirmed four houses were completely destroyed in an area off Highway 14.

Seven people were taken to Montfort Hospital and officials are optimistic that all seven will be released this morning.

"Before you know it all I can hear is something sound like it's tearing the roof off the back of the house" said John Ashford, one of the survivors. "The only thing I could do is just hit the floor and just take that ride. Thank the good lord and letting me be here."

Not much was left of the home Ashford was in. It's nothing short of a miracle that he survived.

Since the damage was concentrated in one area, Attala County schools will be open.
