SMITH COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - Smith County residents are cleaning up from a tornado that struck in the middle of the night. The storm hit just before 3 AM when most people were asleep, causing widespread roof damage, and destroying one home.

The twister struck communities just west and north of Raleigh. The National Weather service classified the twister as a EF-2 tornado.

One house on Highway 35 owned by the Johnson family was completely destroyed by the tornado. The family of five was partially trapped inside after the twister passed over, but no one was hurt.

Today family and friends assisted them in recovering their belongings, and tearing down what was left of their home.

The Smith county Emergency Management Agency also reports one trailer was destroyed, and numerous other structures damaged west of Raleigh on Highway 540.
