Conerly Trophy awarded Tuesday to top MS college football player
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Southern Miss. Quarterback Austin Davis, Mississippi State Linebacker Chris White, and Jackson State's Casey Therriault were named finalists for this year's Cellular South Conerly Trophy.
The award was announced Tuesday night during a special ceremony at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.
"The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is proud to announce the winner of this year's Cellular South Conerly Trophy which is awarded annually to the state's best college football player is, from Mississippi State University, Chris White," announced Michael Rubenstein, Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum Executive Director.
Mississippi State Linebacker Chris White became the fourth player from Mississippi State to win the award, but he is the first non running back from the school to capture the honor.
White led the Bulldogs in tackles and helped MSU earn their first bowl appearance in years.
"It's a special honor not only for me but for Mississippi State University and you know, I was going up against stiff competition but you know they voted on who they wanted to get it," said Chris White, Cellular South Conerly Trophy winner.
"It's kinda you know I at times I really don't believe it at times you do it when go out there, you got a lot of people support you, so I mean that always good to have, to have people behind your back and hopefully I can keep being successful and I appreciate all my coaches, my coaches are unbelievable ah so hopefully I'm just ready to come back next year and ah go strong again," said Casey Therriault, Cellular South Conerly Trophy finalist.
"You know I thought this year our team was more of a family we went through a lot with off the field issues and we had some ups and downs on the field as well I think we really bonded as a family ah it was a fun year it was a fun year to be a part of and it was one I'll always remember, " said Austin Davis, Cellular South Conerly Trophy finalist.
This is the first year that the same school has produced back to back Cellular South Conerly Trophy winners.
