RIPLEY, MS (WLBT) - WLBT has more details in the shooting death of Tippah County Sheriff's Deputy Dewayne Crenshaw.

It all happened Friday morning around 4 a.m. on Persons Road in Ripley.

The 62-year-old sheriff's deputy was responding to a disturbance call Friday morning when he encountered 26-year-old Franklin Fitzpatrick of Pontotoc.

Investigators say the two men struggled and that's when Fitzpatrick fired the fatal shot that killed Crenshaw.

Fitzpatrick was arrested and charged with capital murder. The Tippah County Sheriff's Department says the last time anyone was killed in the line of duty was in 1940 when a constable was shot and killed.

The Mississippi Bureau of investigation is handling the investigation.

Crenshaw was a Vietnam Veteran and has a son who also works with the Tippah County Sheriff's Department.
