JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - The City of Jackson was caught off guard when WLBT News questioned new plans for a high profile piece of residential property.

It's the home of the late Jackson Mayor Frank Melton.

Tuesday WLBT received an email From Stephan Wanger of New Orleans saying the sprawling brick structure will be transformed into a new multi-purpose activity center.

The house happens the be smack in the middle of a residential neighborhood in northeast Jackson.

An email states, "that the city of Jackson is the proud recipient of a new multi-purpose activity center in home."

The house was purchased by Joyce Carracci of Jackson.

Carracci's grandson says the private residence will be used for business presentations, retreat activities and religious meetings.

WLBT found landscapers, painters and other workmen Tuesday at the carters grove house.

A big open house party is scheduled Friday, December 10.

But we had questions for city officials about potential zoning violations.

Chris Mims, the city's spokesman, said he found out about this from WLBT.

Mims said the property is not zoned for that use, and the family has not pulled a single permit for the house.

The city will now contact the owner.
