JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Mississippi became the first state to use a sophisticated new system capable of determining if trucks on the highway are safe and within weight limits.

A $450,000 van, bought with a federal grant, is one of only two in existence.

Mississippi is the first in the nation to be able to use such a van to read a license plate off of a truck as it rolls down the road and send that information, by satellite, to a data base, and almost instantly get information back about whether that truck is legal.

It is also equipped with an infra red camera to determine if a truck's brakes are good and whether it is leaking anything.

Mississippi has the capability to weigh a truck as it rolls down the road.
