ROANOKE, VA (WAFF)- The amber alert for 12-year-old Brittany Smith has been canceled.
Investigators say someone recognized Smith and her alleged abductor Jeff Easley in California and called police.
"It's with a tremendous sense of relief that I say we have located Brittany. She is well and she is in good hands at this time," said Roanoke County Police Chief Jim Lavinder.
Brittany has been missing for more than a week.
The search ended 2500 miles from where it started when the Smith and Easley were spotted in a store in San Francisco.
"They notified the San Francisco Police who responded to the scene and located Mr. Easley and arrested him. And made sure Brittany was safe," said Chief Lavinder.
Police say they found them near a tent within walking distance of the store.
Brittany Smith's family now waits to see her again.
"She's been in touch with her family. They're very excited and I'm assuming maybe a family member will go out there and escort her back," said Chief Lavinder.
