STATE WIDE (WLBT)- When you think of nutmeg, you consider it a spice that makes a lot of holiday treats taste good. Guess what, some teens are finding another use for it. They're using nutmeg to get high.
Videos can be found on the internet showing teenagers drinking, eating, smoking and snorting it. Nutmeg contains myristicin, a natural, organic compound that is known to induce euphoria, visual distortions, even hallucinations if consumed in large quantity.
But there's a major downside. Doctors say many nutmeg abusers experience nausea, vomiting, dizziness, even convulsions. "I do believe that increased access to information via the internet has caused an increase in abuse of over the counter non pharmaceutical items", says Anne Slattery of Poison Controll Center.
Nutmeg is just one of the latest ways to get high people are finding out about online. There are potential consequences. Experts say it can cause hallucinations that last for days cause serious health problems!
