USM student charged with beating fellow student is out of jail

HATTIESBURG, MS (WLBT) - The USM student charged with beating a fellow student on campus is out of jail after posting a $15,000 bond.

Chase LaGarde went before a judge Friday without an attorney and was ordered to stay away from the victim, Stuart Ramsey and the campus.

Twenty-one-year-old LaGarde of Bush, Louisiana is charged with aggravated assault in the November 4, beating of Ramsey, a 19-year-old from Jackson.

Authorities said Ramsey sustained a concussion, a broken hand, lacerations and bruises.

The attack has resulted in the suspension of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity at the University Of Southern Mississippi, which is where LaGarde lived.

The fraternity brothers had to vacate the premises Friday. Campus police changed the locks and boarded up the house.

USM's Vice President of Student Affairs Joe Paul says the decision to suspend the fraternity and close down the house came after a series of offenses.
