WARREN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - Late Sunday night fire crews were on the scene of a massive blaze following a train derailment in Warren County. It happened just before 6:00 p.m. Sunday near Highway 61 in Redwood.
Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said 30 box cars carrying paper from the International Paper Company derailed and somehow sparked a blaze. The fire was on a wooden frame rail bridge used only by the Vicksburg Southern Railroad train. The load of paper helped fuel the massive inferno.
"We've contained the area. MEMA officials, rail officials and fire officials are on the scene at the derailments at this time. It is a wait and see situation if they can get enough fire equipment in to address the fire," said Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace.
The derailment occurred in a remote location which caused challenges for Northeast Warren County and Culkin Volunteer Fire Departments. Crews could not bring their tanker trucks to the scene. At last check, fire crews were attempting to use portable equipment to pump water out of a nearby creek. No one was injured.
