JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Its completion was delayed for several months because of financial difficulties, but tonight a new downtown hotel is open for business.
Thursday, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the new Sleep Inn Suites on Gallatin Street in downtown Jackson.
The 67 room facility is owned by a group of black Jackson businessmen and investors known as the lead group. During construction, they had difficulty securing financing to finish the project.
Those behind the new business are now relieved it's finished, and hope it will spur more growth, in a part of downtown where new construction hasn't been seen for years.
Developer Robert Gibbs says, "Not only is it an important part of the puzzle for downtown but also for west Jackson. We are the first major development on the west side of the railroad tracks. We believe we are a bridge between downtown and Jackson State so I think this is the first major development that will hopefully spawn a lot more development in this area."
The hotel rooms are equipped with flat-screen televisions, Internet access, and king or queen beds.
The rooms there will be offered at a reduced rate of $79.99 through the end of the year.
