Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MS (WLBT)- Plenty of people are taking to the skies and the streets to see loved ones this Christmas. The air transport association is expecting more than 44 million people to travel on U.S. flights between last week and the new year.

Triple-A predicts overall holiday travel to rise about three-percent this year with over 92 million people planning to drive or fly more than 50 miles. Interstates 55 and 20 in the Jackson metro area seemed relatively quiet Saturday afternoon.

"The gas prices is kind of high but other than that it's been kind of smooth riding. The interstate has not been as crowded as we thought it was going to be", said John Duncan. The price at the pump continues to rise.

The national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is three $3.03, up from $2.59 a year ago. Here in the Jackson metro area, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is now $2.87. It was only $240 cents a year ago.
