Some Gulf oil spill victims to get $500 checks for Christmas

Posted: Updated:

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - State officials say a fund set up for fishermen struggling since the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is handing out $500 checks to 250 fishermen for Christmas.

The Friends of the Fishermen Fund was set up in July and has raised more than $127,000 through corporate and individual donors, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

The Abita Brewing Co. donated $50,000 through its SOS Charitable Fund and Rouses Markets rounded up $30,000 by selling white boots made of paper at cash registers. They were among the top donors.
