Family continues tradition of volunteering at Christmas

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - For many this time of year is more about giving than receiving, even if that means helping a total stranger.

After sitting down to a holiday meal with their own families, several people gave of their time to help those in need. Children and adults helped serve up a Christmas feast complete with cakes for dessert at the Gateway Rescue Mission on south Gallatin Street.

Jackson's homeless turn to the shelter and kitchen to meet their daily needs. Saturday the charity got some help from the Christian family.

"I'm just saying merry Christmas to everybody, said William Christian."

"It's a great opportunity to show our kids that although they may be fortunate enough to have a warm bed and have had toys this morning and food to eat that there are people that don't. It's really important. We feel like they're learning and part of what they're growing is to their knowledge of what the world is really like," added Jeff Christian.

Jeff's family says helping to serve at Gateway has been their Christmas tradition for the last three years.
