RIDGELAND, MS (WLBT) - Retailers opened their doors early Sunday morning to accommodate shoppers, many carrying gift cards they received the day before.
Northpark Mall was crowded with families looking for after Christmas sales. JCPenny and Belk both opened up at 7:00 a.m. Other stores across the metro area, including Kohls in Flowood, let customers in as early as 5:00 a.m. Shoppers said it is worth waking up early and braving the cold temperatures to cash in on the deep discounts being offered.
"For one, JCPenny is saying it is their biggest after Christmas sale ever today and we also have people with bags everywhere. It's a little different from last year. I think people have a little better mindset about the economy and where we're going for 2011," said Northpark Mall Marketing Manager Allison Lunsford.
According to the research firm Shopper Trak, strong spending this week would build on the highest-spending holiday season since 2007. Predictions call for retail revenue to increase 3% to 4% for the entire season.
