3 Mississippi Democrats switch to GOP

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Three more elected Mississippi Democrats have switched to the Republican Party, bringing the total to 17 to make the change in two years.

State Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith of Brookhaven, state Rep. Bobby Shows of Ellisville and Simpson County Superintendent of Education Joe Welch announced they were switching parties during a news conference Tuesday at Mississippi's GOP headquarters.

Governor Haley Barbour says he expects this is a trend that will continue.

"I think what Bobby Shows said speaks for a lot of Democrats that they feel increasingly like their party has moved way to the left, whether it's President Obama, whether it's Pelosi in congress or even the local level, they feel likes it's moved way to the left and this sort of re-alignment is to be expected."

The changes don't shift the balance of power in the Legislature.

Hyde-Smith has served in the Senate since 2000. She is chairwoman of the Agriculture and Forestry committees.

Shows has served in the House since 1992.

Welch is in his first term as superintendent.
