Company to release gas, pressure at leak site Wednesday

Posted: Updated:

COLLINS. Miss. (AP) - Work crews will perform a blow down Wednesday at a natural gas storage cavern in Covington County to reduce pressure caused by a pipeline leak.

The process, officials say, is expected to release 4 million cubic feet of gas into the atmosphere. However, officials say there would be not be any health hazard because natural gas is lighter than air.

Twenty-five families were moved to a motel in Collins on Tuesday as a precaution.

The pipeline - owned by Williams Gas - is connected to one of seven storage gas storage caverns off in the Eminence community off Mississippi Highway 588 near the Jones County line.

There have been no injuries.

Williams Gas spokesman Chris Stockton says the blow down procedure will let crews take a closer look at the leak.
