JACKSON, MS (WLBT) – If you plan to bring in the new year with a bang, you should think twice if you live in the capital city.
Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson is urging the citizens to resist ringing in 2011 with celebratory gunfire.
"Shooting into the air is illegal and can be very dangerous," said Mayor Johnson. "We want everyone to celebrate the New Year in a safe manner and urge citizens not to shoot into the air as a matter of public safety."
Mayor Johnson also pointed out that the consequences of shooting into the air can prove to be deadly and individuals caught could possibly face charges.
Jackson Police Chief Rebecca Coleman says officers will be on the lookout for this type of activity and individuals participating in celebratory gunfire will be arrested.
