JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The leaders of a nationally recognized foundation are thanking Hinds County officials for retrieving thousands of dollars donated to them.

The Payton Family Foundation now has more than $28,000 to help students go to college. Back in August, a Florida businessman wrote a bad check that was supposed to go towards the Walter Payton Memorial Scholarship.

When the bad check was discovered, Payton Family Foundation CEO Eddie Payton contacted the Hinds County District Attorney. From there, the DA's bad check unit retrieved the money from the Florida businessman in three installments.

"It means a great deal to me to be able to keep my word and keep Walter's reputation for being the type of individual he was intact," said Eddie Payton. "If we say we're going to do something, we're going to do it."

The scholarship is a memorial to football legend Walter Payton.
