Possible tornado rakes across central Mississippi

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A possible tornado was spotted over Interstate 55 in Mississippi while broad swaths of Louisiana and Mississippi were under tornado watches as severe weather moved across the South.

Some damage has been reported in the Byram and Pearl areas. Across the WLBT viewing areas, trees and power lines were reported down on roads and some structures. Some 19,000 Mississippi residents lost electricity, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

On Childre Road in Pearl, a large tree fell on a duplex. The pregnant woman inside managed to escape with her husband. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

Various law-enforcement agencies set up a command post in the parking lot of Sonic on Highway 80. Some Pearl neighborhoods were closed to traffic.

In Hinds County, a similar command post was established in the parking lot of a Byram restaurant.

Watches and severe weather warnings prompted by heavy thunderstorms were posted throughout the day by the National Weather Service. And the threat of storms hung over New Year's Eve celebrations across the area.
