EF-2 tornado that struck Attala Co. may have been most devastating

ATTALA COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - Forecasters believe Attala County may have seen the worst damage after an EF-2 tornado moved through the area just after midnight on Saturday.

Residents there have seen their fair share of severe weather over the last nine months.

Attala County was slammed in late April when an EF-4 tornado tore through Hesterville and surrounding areas. Twenty-six homes were destroyed. On November 29th, an EF-3 twister came through south Attala County demolishing two mobile homes and damaging many others. Then early New Years Day an EF-2 with maximum winds of 135 miles an hour injured one person and caused extensive damage to numerous buildings.

When the sun came up, Skycopter 3's Coyt Bailey surveyed the damage.

"We're to the north west of Kosciusko in Attala County and we understand this is a Children's Camp in this one that has received extensive damage." "This is just across the road from the Children's Camp here. You can see what appears to be a garage which was just completely destroyed off the side of that home. You can see all the trees down here see the trailers in the yard that was blown over," Bailey said as he observed the area from above.

Officials with the National Weather Service say Saturday's tornado began near Highway 12 south-east of Durant. It crossed Highway 19 and eventually weakened to the north of Ethel.
