Child porn charges in Jackson County hit record

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd says investigators made a record number of arrests on possession of child pornography offenses in 2010.

According to reports, the 23 men arrested on child porn charges covered every socio-economic group.

Two were church volunteers who worked with youths. Two others were law enforcement officers. One was a registered nurse, who was also charged with distributing child porn. Another was an Internet technician with a local school system.

Byrd said there's a misconception that people are being arrested for watching 17- and 18-year-olds, but that's not true. He says it's very young children.

In 2009, Byrd said detectives arrested only three men on child porn offenses.
