Mississippi Legislature begins 3-month session Tuesday

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi lawmakers say their 2011 session will be dominated by writing a state budget and redrawing district lines for the state House and Senate.

The three-month session begins at noon Tuesday at the Capitol in Jackson.

The 122 districts in the state House and 52 districts in the state Senate have to be redrawn to reflect changes in the population between 2000 and 2010.

Republican Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant says he wants to ignore the tradition of each chamber drawing its own districts.

Democratic House Speaker Billy McCoy says Bryant should be "ashamed" of suggesting that the Senate have a say in House districts or the House in Senate districts. McCoy says each chamber can draw its own districts fairly.
