Authorities increase investigation area at fatal plane crash site

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - One person died Wednesday night in a plane crash in East Lake near the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived to the 8000 block of 6th Avenue North to find the small plane grounded and ablaze in a grassy area. It happened at 6:41pm tonight.

According to the Federal Aviation Adminstration's website, the small Beech BE58 is registered to Sutters Mill Gold and Jewelry in Pelham.

The plane was on approach to runway 24 at the airport when witnesses say the plane fell from the sky.

Birmingham Police are cordoning a greater area of the scene for investigators to determine the cause of the accident.

No word on any other injuries and no word on how many people were aboard the aircraft.
