JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - 3 On Your Side investigated squalid conditions at a Jackson apartment complex. We checked back and found little done.
City inspectors checked out Nova Park Apartments on Raymond Road in December and found numerous code violations. Thursday Entergy utility crews were back on the scene after we reported suspicious findings. We found squalor and squatters at this rundown apartment complex.
Little has changed when it comes to repairs on the outside. An upstairs wrought iron guard rail is unhinged. Windows are broken out. Doors to unoccupied apartments remain unlocked for anyone to enter.
Those who remain here say it's dangerous inside and out. "She went in some of the apartments trying to fix windows. And things like that. But it's still not to the safety like, the lights are off," said Robert Epps, a tenant. "I'm scare to walk at nighttime myself."
This situation is a two-way street, fraught with problems. Robert Epps and his roommate have not paid rent according to the landlord, yet continue to live in the apartment. The manager tells us other tenants refuse to pay rent as well and that some tenants are allegedly stealing cable and electricity.
Entergy confirms electricity being stolen and shut it down. Eviction notices have been sent out, and judgements are in force to move non-paying renters out.
The City of Jackson had this response: "The Community Improvement Inspector investigated and cited several code violations at Nova Park Apartments. The case is currently going through the standard process. We hope to get these issues resolved as expeditiously as possible for all parties involved.
