HAZLEHURST, Miss. (WLBT) - Friends and family of a young Hazlehurst woman are in mourning after a horrible highway tragedy Tuesday morning.

A mother of two was killed when her car collided with a school bus in Copiah County.

The wreck happened near the intersection of Dixon Road and Highway 51, just north of Hazlehurst.

Family members and friends of Mia Washington, 20, consoled one another Tuesday morning after finding out she was killed in a horrific wreck.

The Lincoln Town Car driven by Washington was completely mangled with the roof torn off.

Officials, on the scene, say they haven't seen an accident like this in quite some time.

"The weight of the bus, I mean the bus just rolled up on top of the car and it was really bad," said Sgt. James Walker, Miss. Highway Patrol.

Sgt. Walker says the accident happened around 7:00 Tuesday morning.

No kids were on the school bus.

The driver of the bus, and a passenger on the bus were taken to the hospital with injuries.

"The driver, he's at Hazlehurst Hospital with a broke arm and the passenger on the bus which is a helper was ejected through the windshield over the car," Sgt. Walker said.

Officials say the bus was going northbound, the car was driving southbound.

The car slid into the northbound lane and the two collided.

"The witness said she'd just got off work, she was headed home and lost control here on Highway 51," Sgt. Walker said.

Authorities say weather may have played a role in the accident.

"The roads was wet this morning, I come from Simpson County and the roads was a little wet, that could have played a part in it," Sgt. Walker said.

Family and friends at the scene say Washington had two children.

Washington and her boyfriend were planning to get married.
