Jackson, MS (WLBT) - Canton Police are confident they've got the man wanted for raping a five year-old girl in December 2010.
Twenty-six year-old Challis Lewis appeared in Canton Municipal Court Wednesday morning. Lewis left the Canton City Hall handcuffed after a preliminary court hearing. Lewis is charged with raping a five year-old girl at the Frey's Lane Apartments in Canton. Lewis's bond is set at just over one point seven million dollars. Canton Police Chief Vickie McNeill says DNA evidence helped police catch Lewis. Police are confident Lewis is the right suspect.
McNeill says, "I won't do anything that'll hurt the case and its ability to be prosecuted, but we have a very strong case and I'm very confident."
Madison County District Attorney Michael Guest hopes to set Lewis before a grand jury later this month. The district attorney hopes to send Lewis to trial by this summer.
