CANTON, Miss. (WLBT) - Canton Police are confident they have the suspect who raped a 5 year old child last month.
Challis Lewis, 26, appeared in Canton Municipal Court Wednesday morning.
Lewis left the Canton City Hall handcuffed after a preliminary court hearing.
Lewis is charged with raping a 5 year old girl at the Frey's Lane Apartments in Canton.
Bond is set at just over $1.7 million.
In addition to being charged with rape, Lewis is also charged with burglary and kidnapping.
"He broke into the apartment where she was, took her to another apartment raped her and returned," said Chief Vickie McNeill of the Canton Police Dept.
Madison Co. District Attorney Michael Guest hopes to set Lewis before a Grand Jury later this month.
The D.A. would like to send Lewis to trial by summer.
