JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A Jackson attorney and businessman is running to fill the vacant Jackson city council seat.

Quentin Whitwell submitted his qualifying papers at the city clerk's office Thursday afternoon.

A special election is being held to replace Jeff Weill who was recently sworn in as a circuit court judge.

Whitwell, who is also a lobbyist, says he has lived in Jackson for 10 years and wants to be a part of the leadership in the capital city.

Well, we are running on the three R's -- reducing crime, recruiting businesses and restoring accountability to city government. We believe that Jackson has wonderful potential. We believe that Jackson has wonderful people and we want to make a difference," said Whitwell.

The special election will be held February 15th.

The deadline for candidates to qualify is January 26th.

The final day for residents to register to vote is January 17th.
