JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Cedric Williams has a long criminal history and he was out committing more crimes this week.

Thursday, Williams was detained shortly after he kicked in the door of a home near Lake Dockery in an attempt to steal a purse inside. Once inside, he was attacked by the homeowner's dog and hit repeatedly with a broom by a housekeeper.

The Hinds County Sheriff's Department says Williams has been arrested 13 times for house burglary since 1989. From 2000 to 2008, Williams was in jail serving part of a ten year prison sentence on other burglary charges.

According to the Mississippi Department of Corrections, after he got out of jail on earned release supervision, Williams was arrested and sent back to prison to serve his full sentence. He was just released again in May of last year.

"At this point obviously the only thing that will rehabilitate him is inside the prison system for a very long time," says Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith.

Investigators are also eyeing Cedric Williams as a possible suspect in other house burglaries in the area.

Williams will have his initial appearance Tuesday.
