JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A local animal shelter was in dire need of donations Friday. Dog food was in short supply for the Mississippi Animal Rescue League in Jackson. To give the dogs consistency in their diet they are asking for only Purina and Pedigree brands of dog food brands. There is also a need for Purina brand cat food.
They were asking for help from supporters to get through these financially difficult months following the holidays. It costs more than $550,000 to operate MARL and it is completely run on charitable donations.
"Our gas bill alone runs $3,500 to $4,000 a month this time of year. It may be a little higher because we've had so much extremely cold weather so it is really difficult for us to divert resources to purchase food. We are literally dependent on the public for donations," said Joe Bennett, MARL's Operations Manager.
Food and monetary donations can be dropped off at MARL's location at 5221 Greenway Drive Extension in south Jackson. Or you can call in a donation at (601) 969-1631. MARL is also acting for volunteers to come and walk the dogs.
