JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A Jackson 3rd grader is home from the hospital after undergoing surgery from injuries sustained in a pit bull attack.
9-Year-Old Marquevenia Keys says he was taken by surprise Monday afternoon, when a pit bull attacked him in front of a neighbors house on Judy Street in south Jackson.
Marquevenia says, "I was playing with a stick in the street and the dog came and I turned to run from the dog. It just bit my stomach and jumped and bit my lip."
Marquevenia used a stick to fight off the pit bull, he says broke loose from a chain, tied to the side of a house. Neighbors called his mother who took him to the hospital, with scars to his face and stomach.
"He lost 20 percent of his mouth, his upper lit off, I was devastated," says his mother Melissa.
Marquevenia's mother talked to police Tuesday evening, and plans to press charges against the dogs owner.
We talked to residents at the home where the attack happened and they claimed it was a stray. There are numerous strays running loose in the south Jackson neighborhood where the attack happened, but Melissa says this dog had an owner, and she's holding them responsible.
She says, "I feel if it's their dog or if they come up and admit it's their dog, get on with it. I was not going to press charges but if they don't do what they need to do, I gotta do what I gotta do."
