JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - This week Joseph Patterson, 23, is standing trial for murder in a Scott County courtroom.

Patterson is accused of shooting and killing Michael Guy at a home off Highway 481, near Morton last May.

Patterson had just graduated from Belhaven University that day, and was attending a social gathering when the shooting took place.

Witnesses said the shooting happened after Patterson fired several shots without hitting anyone, near a group of people attending the event.

Jurors heard testimony Wednesday on the gun residue investigators found on Patterson's hands, after the incident.

"I believe we have established that Patterson was the shooter and we have more evidence of that coming in the morning," said Prosecutor Mark Duncan.

Defense attorney Tom Royals says despite questions about his clients mental capacity, Patterson is holding up well.

Prosecutors plan to call two more witnesses to the stand before resting their case.

Testimony will resume Thursday morning at 9:00.
