Guilty verdict in Scott Co. murder trial

FOREST, MS (WLBT) - Jurors in Scott County have returned a guilty verdict in the case of a 23-year-old man charged with murder. He was immediately sentenced to life in prison.

Joseph Patterson was accused of killing Michael Guy during a social gathering in Morton last May.

Scott County prosecutors argued Patterson shot Guy in the face just hours after graduating from Belhaven University.

Patterson took the stand Thursday, claiming he didn't remember shooting Guy. He speculated that someone slipped a drug in his drink, causing him to act violently.

The defense called several character witnesses, all of whom claimed Patterson was a peaceful person who never showed any aggression.

Prosecutors said Patterson signed a statement admitting to the murder the day after the shooting.
