JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Diabetes awareness was the hot topic Saturday at the Marriott Hotel in Jackson, where the Diabetes Super Conference took place. It's put on by the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi.
Hundreds from across the state show up to learn more about their illness, including breakthroughs in research and treatment. It's also a time to chat with medical experts.
"I suffer from Type 2 diabetes," says Jean McKinney of Jackson, who attended the event. "Hoping to get a continuation on how to manage the diabetes, and the new things that are coming out."
Miss America 1999, Nicole Johnson, suffers from Type 1 diabetes. She came along to encourage children and adults.
"I've been spending time with the young children today, talking about never giving up, how to talk about being victorious, not letting people make fun of them," Johnson says.
Diabetes is a chronic disorder in which the body fails to process sugar correctly.
