MDOT announces I-20 reconstruction project

FOREST, Miss. (WLBT) - The Mississippi Department of Transportation announces a major construction project to rebuild part of Interstate 20 in Scott County.

The project will restore an 18-mile section of pavement from Highway 481 to the Newton County line.

The work will also include replacing the Yazoo clay beneath the roadway.

The price tag for the reconstruction project is more than $57 million and will take over 2 years to complete.

"This thing is not only going to affect not only Mississippians, but it's going to affect people traveling from the east coast to the west coast that come through here everyday on this interstate highway," said Dick Hall, Central District Transportation Commissioner.

"So, it's going to be a long difficult project. One side of the interstate will be closed down. We'll have traffic down to two lanes going head to head. When we get through with it, we'll have a highway that will last generations to come," Hall said.

Commissioner Hall says the project is expected to be finished in May 2013.
