RIDGELAND, Miss. (WLBT) - Instead of hunting down shopping deals Wednesday, many of Northpark Mall's guests were hunting down jobs.

"My main goal is to get a job to be more successful for me and my children," Demartennia  Stevenson said.

Dozens of employer's set up booths in the center court of Northpark Mall for the annual WLBT Job Fair.

Nationally, just over 9% of Americans are unemployed.

Here in Mississippi, close to 10% of the population is out of work, with nearly 8% unemployment in Jackson and surrounding areas.

Despite those statistics, those looking for work say this fair gives them hope that they won't remain unemployed much longer.

"I've been actually having a feeling like I'm going to get a job real soon and you know," Stevenson said. "I've just been having this real good feeling, like today, when I saw the job fair something just told me go here, go here, this is your calling you're going to get something here."

Just about every company that's represented at the fair have positions open and available, making this fair, a prime spot to find a job.

"I look at this as a Blessing because you don't get this opportunity much," Stevenson said.

In addition to potential employers on hand, a number of local colleges and schools, including the "Academy of Hair Design" also participated in the fair.

Their goal is to speak with individuals, like Stevenson, who're also looking to advance their cosmetology skills.

"It's different things that they can do in one, it's not just hair, it's not just cutting hair, it's the nails, the facial, the make-up, it's different things you can do," Kim Lewis, Admissions Director for the Academy of Hair Design, said.
