JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The Jackson Public School District reached out to all fathers and father figures Thursday night. School leaders say both parents are important in the successful development and education of a child.
This is the 8th year the Dads of Destiny Conference has been held to encourage fathers to get involved in their children's lives. The speaker for the event, Kenneth Braswell is Executive Director of Fathers Incorporated. He says you cannot ignore the importance of mothers but he says there are too many mothers who face the responsibility of raising their children without the financial and emotional support of fathers.
"It's a huge problem when we know that in the Jackson School District that 77 percent of the students are being raised in single mother households, that's an issue. And we also know that 80 percent of them are poor. What it means is that fathers are absent and we've really got to find a way to get fathers back involved in their lives", said Braswell.
Superintendent, Dr. Lonnie Edwards thanked parents, especially fathers who participated Thursday night. This is apparently his last Dads of Destiny Conference as the head of JPS.
