State Hospital workers rake in overtime pay

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi's Department of Mental Health has paid out almost $66 million in overtime over the past 5 1/2 years.

According to WLBT. nearly half went to employees at the Mississippi State Hospital.

Records show that five people earned more than their yearly salary in overtime.

Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Doug Davis, a Republican from Hernando, says that's odd.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Johnny Stringer says that since the department runs 24-hour facilities, overtime is likely. But the Montrose Democrat says he hadn't realized there was so much.

Department spokeswoman Wendy Bailey says the agency is working to cut overtime. But she says who gets it is a matter of who is available to cover shifts on short notice.
