JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - State Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith announced her candidacy for Commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Agriculture Monday.

Hyde-Smith has been a senator for the past 12 years and Chairman of the Agriculture Committee for the past 8 years.

She comes from three generations of farmers, and her family currently raises cattle in Brookhaven.

Hyde-Smith switched to the Republican Party in December, and says she wants to educate others about the importance of agriculture in the state.

"It represents 25 percent of all of the jobs here. And it is very important in who is going to be in that position," Sen. Hyde-Smith said. "We are full-time cattle farmers in Brookhaven, Mississippi. We make our living in agriculture and we want the safest most affordable food supply for Mississippians that we serve everyday."

Current Agriculture Commissioner Lester Spell is retiring after almost 15 years running the department.

The primary election begins in August, and the general election will is in November.
