JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - A candidate for the upcoming special election for Jackson City Council is challenging his opponent's qualifying papers.

Quentin Whitwell is running for the seat vacated by Ward 1 Councilman Jeff Weill.

Whitwell contends his opponent Patricia Ice provided signatures that appeared to be written by the same person.

Whitwell also says that some names were misspelled.

Whitwell petitioned to have Ice disqualified from the race.

But election commissioners approved her petition, allowing her to qualify for the race.

"It's really apparent from the face value of the handwriting in the petition that they should dispose of those signatures which would mean my opponent would not actually qualify as a candidate," Whitwell said.

Patricia Ice said Whitwell's claims were made without merit.

The Ward 1 Council election is Feb. 15.
