Rally for Scott Sisters' pardon

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - A push is underway to grant full pardons for the Scott Sisters who were recently released from state prison.

A town hall meeting was held Tuesday night at Tougaloo College for Jamie and Gladys Scott.

It was the first in a series of nationwide gatherings.

The sisters were freed Jan. 7 when Gov. Haley Barbour suspended their life sentences for armed robbery.

Tougaloo students are being mobilized to join the efforts to request a full pardon.

Event organizers say the governor has pardoned 5 murderers and should do the same for the sisters who need to be able to travel to advocate for kidney donations and prison reform.

"If the State of Mississippi is truly about trying to reconcile all if its past crimes against African people then this is just a step forward in terms of reconciling some of those issues and again these sisters just need to be free," Asinia Lukata, Committee For Full Pardon, said.

Pardon committee organizers say a march will be held April 1st in Jackson with participants walking from Farish Street Park to the State Capitol.
