JACKSON, MS (WLBT) – MDOT officials kept a watchful eye on the weather in the west Wednesday while preparing for any wintry precipitation that could move into central Mississippi.

Crews spread de-icing materials on the Fortification Street overpass at I-55, demonstrating roadway preps.

Rock salt and small crushed stones will be scattered on bridges and overpasses if icing occurs.

The materials will melt the ice and give tires traction.

This is the third time in recent weeks that MDOT has readied crews for impending wintry precipitation.

More than 30 workers in Hinds county are on standby to tackle icy roadways if needed.

"Anybody that does have to be out just carry simple stuff like jumper cables, ice scrapers and just be extra careful when you're approaching a bridge and have your speed under control," said MDOT Maintenance Superintendent Donald Wash.

Officials suggest that if you find yourself skidding don't slam on brakes instead steer in the direction that you want the front of the car to travel.
