JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The icy conditions on roads caused chaos for early Friday morning travelers.  A wreck involving four 18 wheelers on the Yazoo/Madison County Line happened around 4:15 a.m. Friday.

"The lead 18 wheeler began sliding.  The second, which is the tanker behind us, turned and tapped his breaks.  When he did that the trailer went sideways clipping the rail of the bridge and overturning," said Bentonia Police Chief Edward Ferrell.

It was finally cleaned up nine hours later. "There's no doubt in our minds.  The icy conditions caused this accident," said Chief Ferrell.

MDOT crews were spotted placing de-icing material on bridges and over passes as the sun began to rise.  "Our crews have been working tirelessly to make sure de-icing materials are on our highways," said MDOT spokesperson Carrie Adams.

In Madison County a driver flipped his vehicle on a bridge on Old Canton Road near Tidewater Lane.  No injuries were reported.

The slippery conditions also caused a wreck which involved a Jackson Police officer under the Interstate 20 bridge at Valley Street.

Eyewitnesses told WLBT the officer lost control of his white firebird while chasing a stolen vehicle.  He was hospitalized.  Roads began to thaw during the day, but preparations were already being made in case of a refreeze in the overnight hours.
