Reeves Announces Candidacy for Lt. Gov.
FLORENCE, MS (WLBT) - A big announcement was made impacting the political landscape in Mississippi Monday morning. State Treasurer Tate Reeves announced his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor in his hometown.
"I can't imagine making an announcement of this type anywhere else," Reeves said. "It's on basketball courts in Florence and other small towns in Mississippi, where I learned a whole lot of life lessons."
The gymnasium at Florence Middle School served as the backdrop for Reeves declaration. There students, supporters and voters listened to Reeves' ideas and goals for the 2011 campaign.
"Public policy is what matters to me," Reeves said. "We've come a long way under Governor Barbour. We have a lot more to do and that's an area in which I can serve to help improve our state."
With his announcement Reeves officially joined State Senator Billy Hewes as Republicans running for Lt. Gov. As of now, they are the only two candidates to start campaigns which will culminate with party primaries in August.
No Democrats have announced a campaign for lt. gov., and current lt. gov., Republican Phil Bryant, is running for governor.
Reeves has served Mississippi as treasurer since 2003.
