JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Some motorists were fighting mad after being stuck on the stack in Jackson for hours during icy weather last week. Many placed the blame on MDOT crews for not putting enough de-icing material on the flyover .
Central District MDOT Commissioner Dick Hall held a news conference Monday to quell criticism.
When freezing rain hit the stack around 3:30 Thursday afternoon, MDOT had de-iced the fly over. Even so, the tall bridges glazed over quickly and turned dangerous.
A 18-wheeler jackknifed creating a traffic nightmare. With no way to turn around or go forward, motorists were backed up bumper to bumper for hours.
Commissioner Hall apologized today but said nothing could have prevented the chain of events.
Commissioner hall says his agency followed protocol, adding MDOT will be more sensitive to the stack during icing conditions.
Hall said the ice storm was an unusual occurrence and his crews did the best they could to keep roadways open and safe.
