Two injured in belhaven blaze

By: Jewell Hillery

Smoke from this house fire at 736 Euclid Avenue could be seen from miles away. Jason Edwards lives right across the street and saw everything up close. Edwards and several neighbors flocked outside to watch firefighters battle the flames.

Edwards says, "like any neighbor I came out alarmed, came out to see what was there, the fire trucks had just arrived it was kind of a small fire billowing from the top of the structure."

The fire was reported just before 7:00am Tuesday morning, and within minutes much of the home became swallowed in the blaze.

Jackson Fire Department division chief R.D. Simpson says, "we had a neighbor or a passerby to come and see the fire burning and came around to the fire station and notified the fire department."

Division chief Simpson says two men in their twenties were taken to UMC with injuries.

"Right now we know that one was seriously injured and of course its going to be smoke inhalation and things being associated with being inside a burning building," says Simpson.

Nearly an hour after this fire began flames and smoke were still visible and neighbors say they're just thankful the fire department is just around the corner.

Edwards says, "some of the neighbors we were talking about that and you know what a comfort it is to know that they're just literally two blocks away if that."

It's a scene many say hits too close to home. "You know as a kid you see the fire department will do a demonstration at the school, but I've never, it's never hit this close to home kind of startling and a little bit frightening honestly," says Edwards.

Officials from the fire department say the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
