MDOT recommendations for cold weather travel

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Snow is possible across some portions of the WLBT viewing area, beginning around noon Wednesday..

The moisture will begin falling as rain and change over to snow across the Mississippi delta counties.

In case of precipitation, motorists are urged to slow down when traveling over bridges and overpasses and be aware of possible icy patches.

MDOT offers the following safety tips for motorists:

• Drive according to current road and weather conditions.
• Keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
• Avoid situations where you may have to brake suddenly.
• Have tires and tire pressure checked. Tire pressure decreases in colder weather.
• Check weather and travel conditions before heading out.
• Wear comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict your movement while at the wheel. Keep warm clothing for getting out of your vehicle.
• Make sure you travel with at least half a tank of gas.
• Make sure you have sufficient windshield washer fluid in the reservoir.
• Follow all traffic control devices including all speed limit and stop signs.

MDOT recommends drivers keep a winter survival kit in their vehicle.

Recommended items are:

• Ice scraper
• Tow chain
• Booster cables
• Road flares
• Antifreeze
• Flashlight and batteries
• First-aid kit
• Blanket
• Bottled water

The Mississippi Department of Transportation encourages all motorists to drive carefully, especially in wintry weather conditions.

Drivers should stay alert, slow down and stay in control while traveling during winter weather.
